The Philippines As An Island Country

Large archipelagos in Asia that are countries include:

1. Indonesia:
This Southeast Asian country is made up of more than 17,000 islands, making it the largest archipelago in the world.

2. Philippines:
As mentioned earlier, the Philippines is an archipelago consisting of more than 7,000 islands mainly divided into 3 regions - Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.

3. Japan:
Japan is an archipelago located in East Asia, comprised of 5 main islands - Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku - as well as numerous smaller islands. It has more than 14,000 islands.

Indonesia and the Philippines are 2 of the original 5 that qualified as archipelagic states defined by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) signed in Jamaica in 1982. The other 3 are the Bahamas, Fiji, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea.
